2012 Fishing Trip
Fishing report
A good time was had by the non-sea-sick anglers who fished on two boats: the Outer Limits and the New Rayann. We had good weather conditions and a family style fishing trip. The catch was less than expected. After three weeks of at least one fish per angler and many days of two-fish-limits per angler, we caught a total of 25 fish, or a half-fish per angler with the big fish weighing 24 pounds.
We fished northeast of the weather buoy. The ocean was fairly calm in the morning and became a little rougher in the afternoon as the wind picked up to 15 knots. A few people became sea sick but only one for the whole day.
We saw whales blowing their clouds of steam as they swam nearby searching for the many balls of krill which are very small red shrimp. In general, the salmon were running deep below the balls of krill, feeding on those at the bottom of the ball. The anglers in the back of the boats caught more fish than those on the sides or front because they had no anglers behind them and they could fish deeper without causing tangles.
Ray Zerbib gave all of us insulated cup holders. Colby provided two pints of brandy to both boats. The French Tri Color flags were attached to the top of both boats and were visible throughout the day.
The Outer Limits was filled to capacity with 28 anglers. The captain, Jim Robertson, netted many of the fish. To minimize tangles, the deckhand had the anglers in the front of the boat fish shallow and those behind them progressively deeper. When the salmon are shallow those in the front do better than those in the back. This boat caught 10 fish but lost several due to inexperience anglers and one due to a sea lion who stole a 20-plus pound fish from one angler’s line. The most successful angler on this boat was Christine Segalas who caught three fish but had to release one because it was less than 20 inches in length. She paid attention to her line all day and kept it free of grass that accumulated on her weight. Jacques Souvercaze caught two fish including the biggest fish (20 pounds dressed) on this boat and won the $20 big-fish prize. Christian cleaned all the fish on the return trip home.
The New Rayann was also filled to capacity. The skipper Johnny Atkinson also known as Johnny Fresh is the most productive party boat skipper in the bay area. The boat caught 15 fish. Each family did leave with a fish for their table. There must have been a party on this boat because two cases of beer were consumed. Like last year, the big fish was caught by Bertrand Urruty on the New Rayann, for the $20 prize. Bertrand , is the father in-law of the Ligue’s secretary. The Ligue’s treasurer caught the biggest fish on the Outer Limits. Seems odd, doesn’t it?
